SPINC: A 3D Printed Desk Clock That Charges and Dispenses AA Batteries

December 5, 2024

Modern technology has introduced a multitude of rechargeable devices, yet many everyday gadgets still rely on traditional AA or AAA batteries. While these replaceable batteries extend the lifespan of devices, their frequent use can lead to waste and recurring costs. For those who prefer rechargeable alternatives, the available chargers often prioritize functionality over design.
Enter SPINC, a creative take on battery charging that combines functionality with novelty. Designed by Maximilian Kern, this 3D-printed device reimagines how rechargeable AA batteries can be charged and stored, all while doubling as a stylish desk clock.

A Fresh Perspective on Battery Charging

Traditional NiMH battery chargers have remained unchanged for years, relying on boxy designs that prioritize efficiency. While they can charge multiple batteries simultaneously, they lack innovation and aesthetic appeal. SPINC breaks this mold by delivering a single-battery charging solution with a twist: a unique queuing mechanism.

SPINC can hold several AA batteries at once, charging them sequentially. As each battery finishes charging, it’s automatically ejected, ready for use. The experience is akin to a vending machine—drained batteries go in, and fully charged batteries come out. This automated process offers a touch of fun and curiosity to an otherwise mundane task.

Form Meets Function

SPINC’s innovative mechanism isn’t its only standout feature. Designed to sit on a desk, the device doubles as a functional clock, seamlessly integrating into a workspace or home office. Its sleek and modern aesthetic adds charm to its practicality, making it more than just a tool.
While its single-battery charging capacity may not meet the needs of heavy users, SPINC’s design inspires creative thinking. For light users or those intrigued by clever gadgets, it provides a fascinating alternative to standard chargers.
